- Virtual Reality at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications
- (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
-
- NCSA is one of the NSF supported supercomputing facilities. Virtual
- Reality was introduced to NCSA in Fall, 1991. The facilities are
- centered on NCSA's Silicon Graphics 340VGX computer, and includes
- three different platforms for VR development. The first platform is
- based on the SGI itself, and includes SGI shutter glasses and a
- wide-screen projection TV. The second platform is a VPL setup,
- including one DataGlove, EyePhones, and Polhemus trackers. The third
- platform is based on a boom-mounted display from FakeSpace. Since all
- equipment is centrally located, developers can mix-and-match
- equipment.
-
- Other facilities at NCSA include a Connection Machine (with
- a new CM-5 coming in Spring, 1992), two Crays (a Y-MP and Cray-2),
- a Convex, and the Renaissance Lab, which houses 20 SGI Personal
- Iris workstations.
